Food Rescue

Food rescue is when an organisation like us recovers surplus food from growers, manufacturers, retailers (like supermarkets) and wholesalers to prevent this food from being wasted.

There can be a variety of reasons why there’s surplus food including food imperfections, incorrect packaging, discontinued products which can no longer be sold in shops, there’s limited shelf life on the product or it’s ripe and needs distributing as soon as possible!

We had an avocado farmer deliver 200kgs of fresh avocado because they were considered b-grade (so not acceptable quality for retailers) and they were already ripe so needed to be distributed quickly. We had those avocados out to our community the next day. Guac anyone?

Food rescue is the sweet solution between two global issues:

Food waste – a ⅓ of food produced around the world is wasted and we know that in New Zealand, households chuck out over $650 worth of uneaten food – that’s enough food to feed a family of four for two weeks!

Food insecurity – 1 in 9 people are undernourished and in New Zealand, 1 in 5 children face food insecurity.

By recovering food and redistributing this back into the community, we fulfill our mission to feed people, not landfill!

Aotearoa Food Rescue Alliance

Fair Food are members of the Aotearoa Food Rescue Alliance (AFRA) which was formed in 2020 in recognition of the food rescue sector in New Zealand.

Facts About Food Rescue

If food waste was a country, it would be the third biggest emitter of carbon emissions behind the United States and China. And this is three times the amount of carbon of the aviation industry worldwide!

Facts About Food Rescue

New Zealand homes throw away 157,398 tonnes of food per year, all of which could have been eaten. This is enough food to feed the whole of Dunedin for nearly three years! Wasting this much food costs the average household $644 a year (Love Food Hate Waste NZ).

Facts About Food Rescue

Nearly half of all fruit and vegetables produced globally are wasted each year (United Nations Environment Programme).

Facts About Food Rescue

One in five children in New Zealand are living in households where food runs out (Child Poverty Related Indicators Report May 2021).

Facts About Food Rescue
