Food rescue is when an organisation like us recovers surplus food from growers, manufacturers, retailers (like supermarkets) and wholesalers to prevent this food from being wasted.
There can be a variety of reasons why there’s surplus food including food imperfections, incorrect packaging, discontinued products which can no longer be sold in shops, there’s limited shelf life on the product or it’s ripe and needs distributing as soon as possible!
Food waste – a ⅓ of food produced around the world is wasted and we know that in New Zealand, households chuck out over $650 worth of uneaten food – that’s enough food to feed a family of four for two weeks!
Food insecurity – 1 in 9 people are undernourished and in New Zealand, 1 in 5 children face food insecurity.
By recovering food and redistributing this back into the community, we fulfill our mission to feed people, not landfill!
Fair Food are members of the Aotearoa Food Rescue Alliance (AFRA) which was formed in 2020 in recognition of the food rescue sector in New Zealand.
We couldn’t thank these organisations enough who give us daily access to recover and rescue their surplus food. These guys are the champions when it comes to reducing food waste and making sure good food reaches those who need it most.

The New Zealand Food Network is like the mother of all food rescue! With a national network of food hubs (like us!), they share bulk surplus and donated food around the motu.
Serving over 40+ community groups across Auckland, Fair Food supplies food to frontline community groups, social agencies and organisations who provide their clients with food to support their immediate needs. Each organisation is thoroughly assessed and a memorandum of understanding is signed with key terms and conditions.
